概要 T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) was greatly affected by his mother, Charlotte Champe Eliot (1843-1929). This paper examines the close relation between five of Eliot's early poems and his mother. In "The Love ...Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1910-11) and "Portrait of a Lady" (1910-11), he felt repelled by her home education. In "Preludes" (1910-11), he was influenced by her love and sympathy toward certain subjects, whether people or not. In "Rhapsody on a Windy Night" (1911), he accepted her spirit of inquiry into life. In The Waste Land (1922), recollecting the view of Gloucester in childhood, he entreated his mother to alleviate his disillusionment with life. Eliot loved his mother, although he sometimes drove her away.続きを見る
