The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a camp experience on the coping and self-esteem of elementary school children in foster homes. Participants were 17 children from foster homes ...(Grades 4-6) who participated in a 4-day organized camp program. The educational goal was to develop participants' self-esteem, self-efficary, and sociality through challenging activities in a natural environment. Before and after the camp we administered the Coping Scale in Elementary Children as developed by Otake et al. (1998), the Self-esteem Scale by the Fukuoka Prefecture Ambitious Youth Project (2010), and the Inventory of Organized "self-esteem" scores increased significantly after the organized camp experience. In addition, multiple regression analysis indicated that "self-esteem" was positively rerated to "experience of challenge/mastery" and negatively rerated to "contact with nature". Finally, we discussed the benefits of an organiszed camp program for children's "self-esteem" as well as prospects for future research.続きを見る
