概要 |
It is argued in Karttunen 1977 among others that the semantic representation of a wh-question involves an existential quantification. At the same time, a multiple wh-question which allows a pair-list ...answer is often considered to involve a universal quantification. This paper points out that it is rarely discussed explicitly what brings about the universal quantification, and argue that the distribution of these quantification cannot be properly accounted for under the assumption that a wh-word corresponds to a quantifier. Instead, this paper proposes that the source of the universal quantification is a certain structural relation. Thus it will be claimed that a wider range of sentences potentially involves a universal quantification and that a multiple wh-question is simply a particular instance of it.続きを見る
