History of Browns lily (Hakata lily, Lilium brownii var. colchesteri) in Japan was again discussed based on the further survey of old fine arts, fabrics and literature. Design of lily and court-cow-carriage patterns on "Noh" costume or a painting entitled "Peonies and lilies" (Attributed to Tawaraya Sotatsu) is the oldest image of Hakata lily. The oldest literature in which the word "Hakata lily" was found is a book of Haiku poems of 1633. It is considered that the lily was introduced into Japan in the era of Azuchimomoyama (1568-1600).
