概要 The purpose of this paper is to review the methodology of the study on the pre-war history of social education including adult education, especially during the 1890s-1920s in Japan. Firstly, this pape...r presents a review of books and periodicals on its history. Seiichi Miyahara is well known for his contribution to the early development of the methodology on the study of social education in postwar Japan. He discussed the essence of social education through the historical approach to the study of social education in contradistinction to school education, while considering it as a confluence of both the national policy for social education and self-education movement. Toshio Ogawa, who is one of the leading researchers following Miyahara, further developed this methodology. Differing from Miyahara, he considered the concept of social education as a contradiction between the national policy for social education and self-education movement. He also studied the thoughts of social education in the Taisho period, known as Taisho Democracy, from the viewpoint of educational democracy, whilst giving attention to the contradiction with the national policy. His works had a great influence on the establishment of scientific methodology in the study on the history of social education. Recently, a new methodology has been developed with the concept of modernization being re-examined, while commenting on the methodology developed by researchers such as Miyahara, Ogawa and the like, based on modern values. Secondly, this paper considers the methodology of the study on the history of social education from the viewpoint of 'society' in addition to 'nation'. This paper discusses the concept of social education as an idea indicating a relationship between education and society. Although the pre-war history of social education has mainly been studied as a means of controlling the nation based on the national policy by many researchers such as Ogawa. In this context it is significant to re-examine the thoughts and activities of social education during the 1890s-1920s, paying attention to the concept of 'the socialization of education and the education of society'. Thus we will be able to present an another aspect of the history of social education in Japan. which differs from preceding studies.続きを見る
