We visited Ha, Noi, Viet Nam during March 13 and 20, 2005. The main purpose of the visit was to siscuss the detail of the joint symposium with Hanoi Agricultural University (HAU). We have discussed with authorities of the Faculties of Land Resources and Environment and of Agronomy of HAU and agreed with them on the symposium theme, schedule, oral and poster presentations, publication of papers, and excursion to Son La province before the presentaion. Another purpose was to monitor worsening of the quality of surface and ground water, caused by agricultural practies sucn as over-application of chamical fertilizers to fields, around Ha Noi city. We have continued to monitor the water quality at three communes in the northern to western area around Ha Noi sity since October 2002. This time we selected a commne in the southern area around Ha Noi city with help of counterparts of the Faculty of Land Resources and Environment of HAU. We measured pH and ORP of water at the sampling sites, and concentrations of nitrate and ammonium ions of the water samples were determined by staffs of the Central Laboratory of the Daculty of Land Resources and Environment of HAU. In addition to those purposes, we visited the Institute of Fruits and Vegetables ans the National Institute for Soils and Fertilizer under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to get related information through discussion with Department Head or Director of the institutes and to understand the current research activities in the related fields. We also visited a private seed company to know the situation of distribution of vegetables seeds in the Red River delta. Agricultural environment in th Red River delta, especially near or around Ha Noi city, has quickly changed along with development in the market-oriented economy. Establishment of management practices for sustainable agricultural ecosystem is an urgent research work in the agricultural field, and that is a theme for the joint symposium with HAU which will be held on December 2005.
