女性が詩の中で表現されるのは取り立てて目新しいわけではない。男女を問わず、一般の読者に注目されるのは、どのような女性がどのように描写されているかであろう。20 世紀を代表する詩人 T. S. Eliot（1888－1965）は自らの詩の中で、女性の描写をどのように表現しているのであろうか。この点については、国内外の研究者の間で十分に論述されていないように思われる。エリオットの第一詩集 Prufro...ck and Other Observations (1917) の中から選んだ7 編の詩における女性の描写を検討すると、語り手のさまざまな女性観（魅力、嫌悪、恐怖、憐憫の情）が明らかになる。この女性観を彼の詩の表現内容と結びつけてみると、そこから浮かび上がってくるのは詩人自身の女性観である。そこで、本稿が第一詩集の女性の描写に注意を払って指摘したいのは、エリオットが読者に語り手の内面葛藤を理解させながら、同時に自らの内面葛藤に向き合っていることである。
This paper considers the descriptions of women in the first collections of poems by T. S. Eliot (1888-1965), Prufrock and Other Observations (1917), in which the speakers feel attracted, repulsed, or frightened by the women, yet also have compassion for them. Eliot indirectly expresses the same feelings as the speakers, under the influences of his parents, Henry Ware Eliot, Sr. (1843-1919) and Charlotte Champe Eliot (1843-1929), and his wife, Vivienne Eliot (1888-1948). As a result, when describing women in the first collection of poems, Eliot makes readers understand the mental conflicts of the speakers, and at the same time faces those of his own.続きを見る
