宣教師フロイスLuís Fróisは『日本史』Historia de Japamを著した。外国人による1549～1594年の日本の記録である。フロイスの身近に織田信長や豊臣秀吉がいた。貴重な史料である。フロイスの自筆本は1835年焼失したが、筆写本が残されていた。1974～80年に刊行された松田毅一・川崎桃太翻訳『日本史』は優れた日本語翻訳である。ただしその元になった筆写本（写真版が現在大村市・松...田毅一文庫所蔵になっている）と、その後にリスボン国立図書館Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboaによって刊行された活字本Historia de Japam 1976～1984とを比較すると、異なる部分がある。具体的に最終章であるV部80章で検証してみると、まず数行分の脱落があった。もとの本（写本）自体に数行の脱落があったからである。ほかに翻訳にはケアレスミスによる数字のちがいもあった。一つの章だけで、注釈を含め7箇所の問題点がある。日本史研究者は、翻訳をあたかもオリジナル史料（一次史料）であるかのように使っているが、あくまで翻訳は二次史料だから、論点として引用する場合は原典（ポルトガル語）にあたって確認する必要がある。
The missionary Luis Frois wrote Historia de Japam (History of Japan.) It is a record of Japan during 1549-1594, written by a foreigner. He stayed close to Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is a precious historical sauce. Its original of Frois’ own writing was destroyed by fire in 1835, but handwritten copies have been left. Nihonshi （日本史）by Kiichi Matsuda（松田毅一） and Momota Kawasaki（川崎桃太）, published in 1974-1980, was an excellent Japanese translation of Histroia de Japam. They translated one of the copies, which now belongs to Kiichi Matsuda’s collection of books in Ohmura City. Later, Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa (National Library of Lisbon) published a printed version of Historia de Japam in Portuguese. When we compared the translation and the printed version, however, there were some differences. For example, the Japanese translation had several lines missing in the last chapter, Part V, Chapter 80. We found seven differences and issues in total in Chapter 80 alone, including some differences in number by careless mistakes and the others due to differences of the two copies. Japanese researchers actually take the translation for the original sauce (the first historical sauce), but it is definitely a second sauce and we should confirm the printed version in Portuguese when we quote to reinforce our point of view.続きを見る
