A German cartographer Mayer reproduced and published the “Tatar China Map” (1732 ) by d'Anville’s (1697–1782 ) in France, in the south of the Kaempfer-style shape of the north of Japan; the Oshima peninsula is rendered in the “JEDSO-GASIMA” shape. To its north, there is a large stretch of land extending from north to south; its eastern coast resembles the shape of the southeastern Sakhalin. Sakhalin islands shaped like an angular bracket near the mouth of the Amur River appear in the north, which represents the mystifying knowledge of the area at the time.show more |
