Abstract |
In this paper, I focus attention on the facts about cross-clausal dou-quantification through the observations of Chinese resultative expression (de-phrase), control verbs and left dislocation (topical...ization). I suggest that there is an empty category or (empty) resumptive pronoun, which must be generated in the same clause with dou and must be obligatorily co-indexed with the antecedent being interpreted as universal. Based on this assumption, we gain a further generalization on dou-quantification about locality. Another central observation made in this paper is that a preverbal object (excluding topicalization) can only be accepted when co-occurring with dou and interpreted as universal. Based on this, I suggest that the NP (also an empty category) related to dou-quantification must be extraposed to the position by A'-movement in syntax. In addition, I argue that the universal reading does not result from the NP's being quantified by dou but the dou-quantification on the predicate (VP). I suppose here that dou and the VP adjoined by dou both undergo QR at LF. This paper also shows a possible analysis of dou-quantification on predicates rather than on NPs.show more
