| Abstract |
The present paper addresses itself to the "phonetic substitution phenomenon" often observed during acquisition of the phonological system by children. This study investigated 17 children with "functio...nal articulation disorders," whose phonetic realization of target /k/ was substituted by [t] or [t.]. The phonetic realization of syllables that had [t] and [k] in word-initial position was examined. Data was analyzed in accordance with the phonetic realization patterns of Japanese consonants. It was found that the subjects could be divided into two groups according to the types of substitution they made. One group exhibited the substitution before all of the following vowels, while the other group evidenced the substitution only before the vowels [i] and [e]. Both groups had phonological awareness that the target /t/ was distinguishable from the target /k/.
