Abstract This article discusses an application of attachment theory's viewpoints to assessment of client, especially to “mitate” (Japanese term which means temporaly assessment) in an early phase of psychother...apy. Attachment theory understands an individual's pattern of relationship as an attachment style. The AAI by Main er al. (l985) is mostly used for its assessment, which analyzes contents and ways of conversation about past attachment relationships to understand indivisual's patterns of relationship. Szajunherg (1997) also pays his attention to therapist's feeling, that is, counter-transference in psychotherapy. These viewpoints can he applied to the process of “mitate”. Kitayama (1996) discusses “mitate” in psychotherapy emphasizing the importance of understanding client's object relations and its connection to problems, and its sharing with client. He calls this process as “model making”. By presenting a case of “fearful” style, the process of model making through the viewpoints of assessment of attachment style is discussed.show more
