Abstract Identifying psychological factors associated with athletic success has been a topic of considerable interest to sport psychology researchers in recent years, and much has been learned about the psyc...hological factors of more versus less successful athlete. However, competitive sports often demand athletes to train in intensely physical, psychological, and stressful environment. competitive athletes are required to cope with various stresses in sport situations, such as physical injury, performance slumps, time management, interpersonal conflict, expectations, and fear of failure. Researchers in sport psychology have reported that coping plays an important role in performance enhancement, injury prevention and recovery, and managing performance slumps. The purpose of this paper is to review psychological factors affecting competitive performance, in order to clarify some of the problems concerning performance enhancement. First, we present the assessment of psychological factors, including qualitative interviews, inventory development. Furthermore, we describe that measurable differences exist in the level of skill development displayed by more and less successful athletes in various sports. Second, we describe the state of psychological skill training for competitive athletes. Third, we present that one key factor in bringing an athlete's capability into full play is mental health along with the degree of psychological competitiveness.
