Relationship between Cardio-Thracic Ratio and Body Height and Weight, Blood Pressure, and Pulse Rate in University Students

Abstract It has been known that the Cardio-Thoracic Ratio (CTR) is greater for athletes, patients with hypertension, or patients with renal failure on hemo-dialysis compared to ordinary populations. Also, CT...R reductions are often seen in persons with malnutrition and/or a sedentary lifestyle. However, there are few studies that have examined the relationships between CTR and other physical characteristics such as body height, weight, blood pressure and pulse rate. It is the purpose of the present investigation to examine these relationships in a sample of young healthy adults. The subjects consisted of 2,698 freshmen (1,908 male and 790 female, between 18 and 20 years of age) out of 2,764 who were admitted to Kyushu University in 1995. CTR was calculated as a percentage of the maximal horizontal length of a cardiac shadow against that of bilateral lung fields on indirect chest X-ray films. Results showed that average CTR was 41.0±3.6% (Mean±Standard Deviation), which was not significantly different from other published reports, and "small heart" (CTR≦35%) was found in 162 (6.21%) students and cardiac enlargement (CTR>50%) was found in 30 (1.11%) students. Incidence of "small heart" was slightly higher than that seen in other reports. Also, it seemed to be influenced by differences in the time, site and subjects' characteristics of investigation. CTR positively correlated with body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and systolic blood pressure, and negatively correlated with pulse rate. These results suggest that CTR is determined by the position of the heart, the thickness of the cardiac muscle and the diameters of cardiac chambers. These factors may be influenced by an individual's weight and dynamic circulatory conditions.show more
