Properties referred by metaphor of emotion ― for example “sadness” in “sad melody,” “cheerfulness” in “cheerful brush stroke” , and “fearfulness” in “fearful picture” ― are called “expressive qualitie...s” .Expressive properties are often regarded as a kind of aesthetic properties.Aesthetic properties are value properties, such as “beautiful,” “ugly,” “dynamic,” and “delicate,” that are mentioned when we evaluating artworks or natural things. The purpose of this study is to overview the characters of expressive and aesthetic properties, and to show that some expressive properties are not aesthetic properties. In the section 1 , I explain what aesthetic properties are and point out that aesthetic properties involve（at least） three characteristics:（1） gestalt,（2） training of sensitivity, and（3） value. In the section 2 , I explain what expressive properties are, focusing on the example of “sadness” in “sad melody.” In section 3 , I show that the “sadness” of the melody is not an aesthetic property ― although it is a kind of gestalt, but does not involve training of sensitivity and value aspects.続きを見る
