Abstract This short paper reports the primary production site of stone moulds for casting bronze implements in the Yayoi period, which was excavated in 1992 but has not been recognised as such. The author an...d a team from the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies, Kyushu University, determined chemically that almost all of the stone moulds used for the production of bronze implements in northern Kyushu in the Yayoi period were made of a specific type of quartz porphyry only obtainable in an area upper stream of the river Yabe. Since this discovery, we have been searching for the site(s) where masses of the stone were gathered and properly shaped and sized before brought to the production sites, most of which existed along the northern part of the Chikushi plain and the Fukuoka plain, more than 20 kilometres to the north. The site is located close to the source, and yielded a number of masses of quartz porphyry shaped by a certain technique. Further examinations will be necessary to reconstruct the temporal changes of the shape of moulds and the mode of their procurement and to situate the site in the regional historical context.show more
