Abstract When the Course of Study is revised in 2020 in Japan, English is going to be taught as a compulsory subject at elementary schools. It is known that in Korea, English has been taught as one of regular ...curricula in primary education since 1997. An attempt to understand the differences and the current situation on the levels of reading texts was made in order to get much information about English education at elementary schools. Official English textbooks published in Japan and Korea were analyzed by using readability indexes and comparing language materials such as grammatical items. Grammatical items that Japanese junior high school students should study in the 8th grade were included in the first lesson of a 7th grade textbook of 2009 in Korea. In addition, some grammatical items to be treated in high school curriculum in Japan were introduced in a 9th grade textbook of2013 in Korea. Gunning Fog Index of the 9th grade textbooks in Korea indicated the 9th grade level of the students in the United States. This suggests the same reading level of native language Korean and English as a foreign language.show more
