Abstract In recent years, the proportion of pathological users of the Internet has increased in Japan, and there is a demand for the activity to prevent Internet addiction. The purpose of this review was to pr...ovide an overview of studies examining the effects of "internet addiction" prevention programs for adolescents and to provide suggestions for future research directions. The author collected literature data from PubMed and PsychINFO. 8 studies were selected by the inclusion criteria. The studies were analyzed in terms of program content, study design, and effect indicator etc. Regarding the theoretical background of the program, it applied existing theories (eg, cognitive-behavioral therapy) to Internet addiction problems. Although high-quality evidence is accumulating about the effect of the program, the Internet Addiction Test (Young, 1998) was often used as an effect indicator. The direction of future research is as follows.
(ⅰ) to construct unique program contents based on the characteristics of Internet addiction.
(ⅱ) to clarify the difference in effects by group (group of healthy Internet use, group of Internet addiction tendency).
(ⅲ) to measure effects with scales based on new disease concepts (Internet Gaming Disorder, Gaming Disorder).
(ⅳ) to adopt risk factors and protective factors revealed by studies with meta-analysis as the effect indicator.
