Abstract To many Japanese, the local identity and the community consciousness have become weakened due to the rapid urbanization and industrialization. Therefore, local sport clubs have been required to contri...bute to the reformation of each community. The purpose of this study is to reconsider the qualitative problem of local sport clubs using a survey of sport clubs in Fukuoka-city. 1) We can divide these clubs into three types. The first group includes those that attach importance to athletic meets ( =(a)), second are the recreational clubs ( =(b)), and lastly those that fall between the other two. 2) There are some differences in the activities of each type. Type (a) has tendencies to be fully active, and to perform services for the community. Type (b) has a tendency toward less frequent activity, and not to perform services for the community. 3) In all types, most of the members are satisfied with the activity of each club, and it enriches their lives. Thus, it is considered that local Japanese sport clubs are diversified. Therefore, the qualitative problem requires amendment. For the present we ought not to require uniformity of all groups in contributing to the reformation of each community, but to recognize the specific activities of all types.show more
