Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical characteristics, maximal aerobic power, and some blood lipids, through comparing desk workers with field workers in a company. The subject was ...51 males in the range of 49.9+-4.9 yeaes old. Tow sites of skinfold thickness(triceps, subscapular) were measured, and the percent body fat(%fat) was estimated from these values. Maximal aerobic power(VO2max) was estimated by Astrand's method using graded exercise test by bicycle ergometer. Energy intake of daily life was estimated by questionaire. Measurement for some blood lipids was performed on the basis of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), triglycerides(TG) and glucose. Differences in stature between desk and field workers were not made and were similar to the normal value of Japanese people. On the other hand, body weight and %fat of field workers were both significantly smaller than those of desk workers(p<0.05). Energy intake of daily life was not differentiated between two groups. VO2max of field workers was significantly higher than that of dask workers(p<0.01). Although significant difference in TC was not found between two groups, TG and blood glucose had a tendency to get lower in the case of field workers. HDL-C of field workers was significantly higher than that of desk workers. From these results, we can conclude that the differences in the kinds of physical work in this company effected different forms of standard of employers' health.show more
