Abstract Gynecomastia is defined as excessive development of the male mammary gland. It should be differentiated from other causes of breast enlargement, especially increase of fatty tissue. It is also caused ...by lipoma, neurofibrosis and carcinoma. There are multiple causes of gynecomastia, some with physiologic explanation(in newborns, adlesecents, or the elderly), other representing pathlogic states (increase in estrogen/ androgen ratio), and most, perhaps, due to drug side effects. Carefully taken durg history; a thorough physical explanation for signs of feminization, chronic liver disease, hypogonadism, thyroid dysfunction and testicular tumors; and laboratory tests, including endocrine, liver and renal function, are essential.
