Abstract The author is a member of a research group in Kyushu University with the mission of devising a four-year English curriculum for the students of the Faculty of Engineering in which they are partly requ...ired to study with the help of an online English learning system. We conducted TOEIC-IP twice in three types of classes ( 1) general English + self-study of a listening CD-ROM, 2) a WEB English learning system called Gyuto e, and 3) a control class) with the result that the WEB learning system brings about an outstanding rise in scores in comparison with the other two. This outcome is evidential of the benefit of a WEB-based English learning system and has contributed, at least partly, to a new English curriculum starting in the academic year 2006 in which CALL will gradually be introduced to improve students' command of English. Furthermore, other classes can be very smal1 thanks to CALL classes needing fewer instructors.show more
