Abstract This paper attempts to investigate the possibility of the genetic relationship among Sumerian, Japanese and Altaic mostly by reviewing the book entitled Sumerian and Japanese by Roger Ahlberg. On the ...phonological level, we do not find any clear correspondences in vowels and consonants between Sumerian and Japanese. On the level of morpho-syntax, there are many mistakes and wrong analyses in the book, so his claimed probable cognates including grammatical patterns are not convincing, even though there are many seemingly similar forms and meanings. What is more, since cognates are not found on the morpho-syntax level in those languages, let alone in his book, this fact, on the contrary, gives support to our claim that phonological correspondence between Sumerian and Japaneseare merely a fiction. Therefore, we can safely conclude that there does not appear to be any genetic relationship among Sumerian, Japanese and Altaic.show more
