Abstract One thousand seven hundred and sixty two subjects, 681 males and 881 females (age 22 to 93 years), living in Takashima Island were investigated. The nutrient intakes and food consumption structures we...re analysed by means of a 24 hour recall questionnaire. Intakes of rice, soybeans, fish, alcohol and pickles were greater and those of bread, oil, meat, and milk were smaller in Takashima than those of the National Nutrition Survey in 1987. Protein, fat, calcium, sodium, potassium and vitamin A intakes were lower in the hypertensives than in the normotensives. Blood pressure was positively correlated with alcohol intakes and negatively correlated with the intakes of meat, egg, oil, protein and fat after adjusted for age. The data from the present study suggest that the food consumption structure between normotensive and hypertensive subjects may be different ; a pattern of large amount of side dishes was seen in the former and a pattern of small amount of side dishes and alcohol drinking in the latter.show more
