The purpose of this study is to overview the researches on psychodrama approach aiming at activating the emotional function of the elderly with dementia and to review the future direction of this method. The psychodrama approach includes reflecting and recollecting life stories such as nostalgic memories or events that were difficult but achieved, and acting as improvisational plays using non-verbal action methods. In an environment where activity cannot be exerted, patients tend to be passive, so by this approach, it is necessary for them to be activated the spontaneity, activeness, creativity, and emotional nature of them, and to promote subjective well-being and interpersonal interaction. This psychotherapy is unique to Japan, which is different from Moreno’s original style,and can be customized according to the severity of each symptoms, and meets the needs of Japan facing the 2025 problem. In the future, practical research on this method in collaboration with other occupations will be necessary to study more effective condition of the patient’s recollection and acting to know what kind of support the supporter should provide.
