Abstract | In this paper, I examine the changes in conditions that have made it possible to increase number of working women, and the process of institutionalizing the housewives’ readiness in department stores.... Girls’ high school graduates worked as clerks while preparing to be a housewife, but there is room for consideration as to how such a working style will be developed in department stores. First, I confirm the characteristics of the increasing number of female clerks in department stores, who graduated from girls’ high schools. At the beginning, many female clerks graduated from elementary school, but gradually female clerks graduated from high school was increasing. Clerking was introduced as one of the professions that young women longed for and was attracting many applicants. Most of the job seekers who applied to be recruited as a department store clerk, were from new middle-class households whose mothers were housewives. Next, we will focus on the residential area of clerk’s job seekers. Many applicants from outside Tokyo city were gathering at department stores in the city. During this period, the development of the transportation network attracted female applicants from suburbs of Tokyo City. In addition, girls’ high schools were increasing mainly in the new city area. The expansion of urban life increased the number of female clerks who graduated from high schools. Finally, the increase in girls’ high school graduates changed the work environment in department stores. In the 1930s, the life of a clerk was positioned as domestic training. As female clerks increased, those who had a special awareness of work became less noticeable, while the number of people planning to become housewives increased. In response to this momentum, the female clerks did not learn lessons for housewives herself, but lessons prepared by department stores. Department stores have created workplaces where female clerks graduated from high school prepare to be housewives.show more |
