Abstract This study designed a Japanese foreign language learning (JFL) class using the first principle of instruction (FPI) and examined the effectiveness of the course and the improvement in the students’ wr...iting ability. The relationship between each element of the FPI and the learning outcomes was then examined to identify factors that should be considered when using the FPI in future JFL design. As a result, students’ awareness of the effectiveness of an FPI-based class design saw significant statistical improvement. The results of the correlation analysis confirmed a significant positive correlation between FPI recognition and test and writing scores. The results indicate a need for improvement in JFL design in the future.
