Abstract |
The Upper Triassic Tanoura and Takagochi formations are exposed in the Tanoura district, Kumamoto Prefecture, at the western extremity of the Sakamoto belt, one of several parallel tectonic belts of t...he NEE-SWW trend in the Kuma Massif, Southern Kyushu. The Tanoura formation rests on the Permian Kozaki formation with a distinct unconformity and is overlain unconformably by the Upper Jurassic Sakamoto formation. The same formation is narrowly exposed along the northern margin of the belt to the north of Tanoura and at Iriobana, separated by the Sakamoto formation from the type area. The stratigraphic succession is shown in Fig. 1. Fossils occur at three horizons and the identified species listed on Table 1 indicate the Carnian age. The Takagochi formation appears as an inlier near Takagochi and is unconformably overlain by the Sakamoto formation with a basal conglomerate in most parts. Its lower limit is concealed by faulting. The stratigraphic succession is shown in Fig. 17. Fossils were obtained from three horizons and those from the lower two contain the species identical to those of the Tanoura formation, while Monotis (Entomonotis) cf. typical (KrPARrsovA) from the upper horizon probably indicates the lower part of Norian. Thus the lower part of the formation shows the same age as the Tanoura formation, but they are dissimilar in rock facies.show more
