Abstract Several years ago, I had a chance to observe the fault making the boundary between the Tertiary and the basement rocks in the Kasuya coal field. A special attention was paid to the fact that the dip a...ngle of the fault gradually decreases in proportion to the subground-depth. However, since that time I have not been able to have an opotunity to study the characteristics of such a kind of the fault in other places in the same coal field, because the subsurface work in the coal mines have not been developed enough to meet the fault. In this paper, I describe the results obtained from my observations on such faults developed in some coal mines. The results obtained are as follows: 1) These characteristic faults were not formed after the deposition of the Paleogene sediments in the coal fields but occured simultaneously with the accumulation of the sediments. 2) It may be presumed that the severe disturbances of the lowest coal seams-group were resulted from the sinking of the bottom of the depositional basin, which occured often in the basin.show more
