概要 To recognize and interpret the cyclicity in the flysch-type sequences is one of the most interesting current problems in the reseach of these sediments. In this respect, a detailed quantitative study ...is undertaken on the Eocene Muroto Formation, one of the typical flyschtype sediments in the Outer Zone of Southwest Japan. In six selected segments of the sequence about 8000 couplets of sandstone and mudstone are examined for quantitative sedimentological study as regards bed thickness, type of internal sedimentary structures, paleocurrent directions, grain-size distribution and heavy mineral composition. As result, a cyclicity is recognized in the Muroto Formation and the strata are interpreted as "turbidite". In this paper the origin of cyclic sedimentation is explained in terms of change in velocity of turbidity currents. It is concluded that the sedimentary basin gradually became a static condition from the beginning of sedimentation of member A of the Muroto Formation to the end of that of member C. Member D was subsequently deposited when this basin changed to subside again. Consequently the Muroto Formation should be so revised as to extrude member D as a part of another formation.続きを見る
