Abstract The vitrinite reflectance measurement for coal rank determination on various coal horizons within thick paleogene sediments in Hokkaido especially within the lshikari group is successfully applied to ...confirm a stratigraphic variation pattern. The objects are both flanks of the Sorachi anticline in the northern part of the lshikari coal field and a deep oil exploration drilling (3534 m) at the Tenpoku coal and oil field. The vitrinite reflectance value of the drill hole samples increases with depth (Fig. 9), which infers the accelerated coalification condition at deeper portion of lower horizon. The same increasing pattern with stratigraphic descending order is observed in the Ishikari coal field as fragmental relics of a linear relationship between rank and succession. However, an overall rank variation pattern across the anticline is not uniform but modified by repeat of similar rank at diffrent horizons in the eastern margin of the western flank where the rank of the Noborikawa, the lowest formation is unexpectedly low. This fact of retarding in rank increase is attributed to thinning of its overlying sediments that was caused by an embryonic upheaval of the Cretaceous system near the anticlinal axis.show more
