Abstract | The Akiyoshi Limestone Group is divided into 20 fossil zones, mainly by fusulininans and supplementarily by corals, which were established from palaeontological view points by OTA et al. (1973). The l...owest fusulininan zone, the Millerella yowarensis zone (about 60 m's thick) and overlying Pseudostaffella antiqua zone (about 20 m's thick) characteristically comprise numerous and various kinds of fossils, which are considered to have been important elements of organic reef communities in the Lower to Middle Carboniferous in the Akiyoshi area. The lower part of the Millerella zone (the M. yowarensis zone) is represented by such fusulininans as M. yowarensis OTA and Eostaffella etoi OTA associated with abundant brachiopods, corals, bryozoans and conodonts. It is highly probable that it is correlated with the Earliest Namurian (or the Late Chesterian of North America) to the medial to late Early Namurian of European Russia. The upper part of the Millerella zone (the Pseudostaffella antiqua zone)・is especially characterized by two fusulininan faunas, Millerella marblensis THOMPSON, Ozawainella japonica SADA and Pseudostaffella antiqua (DUTKEVITCH) fauna and Millerella bigemmicula IGO, Nankinell a yokoyamai SADA and Pseudostaf fella minuta SADA fauna, respectively. The former and the latter fauna are correlated respectively with the Early and the Medial Bashkirian of European Russia.show more |
