Abstract Academic career and scientific work of Professor Tatsuro MATSUMOTO are concisely described on the occasion of his retirement on April 1st, 1977 from Kyushu University. Prof. MATSUMOTO's scientific wor...k has been extended to various fields of geological sciences, as seen in the accompanying list of his papers. However, the most outstanding contributions among others are (1) the systematic descriptions of the Cretaceous ammonites from Japan and relevant areas, (2) the biostratigraphical study of the Cretaceous System, and (3) the study of the Upper Cretaceous ammonites of California. The results of (1) have been published in a series of about 50 papers attaining totally more than 1,000 pages and 200 plates. On the basis of this work, Prof. MATSUMOTO established a new, fine scheme of the classification of Cretaceous ammonites and clarified their evolutionary history. The second work has been made on the basis of detailed field survey in important areas of the Cretaceous deposits, particularly in Hokkaido. Prof. MATSUMOTO presented detailed stratigraphical sequences and a fine scheme of zonation, showing zonal indices and ranges of principal species of ammonites and inocerami. This work has resulted in an international correlation of the Cretaceous rocks of Japan\ and adjacent areas with those of European and other provinces. In the third work Prof. MATSUMOTO gave systematic descriptions of Upper Cretaceous ammonites obtained from about 600 localities in California and fine results of correlation within the West Coast of North America and also with the Japanese as well as the international scale. For these distinguished works he was awarded the Asahi Cultural Prize in 1960 and the Japan Academy Prize in 1969. Besides the above mentioned and many other outstanding works in the Cretaceous geology and palaeontology, Prof. MATSUMOTO has made valuable contributions to the geologic history of the Circum-Pacific areas. Lastly it should be mentioned that he took the fine leadership in the organization of intra-and inter-national research projects and in the activity of the Geological Society and the Palaeontological Society of Japan as a councillor and the president.show more
