Abstract A Tertiary formation devleoping in the Nishiichi Basin, Yamguchi Prefecture, is named the Nishiichi Formation and is correlated to the Juraku Formation of the Hioki Group in the Kottoi-Yuyawan distric...ts by OKAMOTO (1965). The Nishiichi Formation consists mainly of remarkable conglomerate and sandstone with minor intercalations of siltstone, showing a cyclic sedimentation. This lithofades is referred to as "the Ideyama type" sedimentary fades commonly found in the non-marine Tertiary formations in North Kyushu. This formation has a thickness of about 150 m or more and is divided into three members by the lithological fades. Another character of this formation is so-called canyon-fill in a part of it, probably the lowermost part. It consists mainly of boulder・ conglomerate, which filled up a small valley cut into basement Kwanmon and Mine Group. Lithological analysis of several conglomerate beds suggests that the main provenance of elastics of the Nishiichi Formation may be the Mesozoic terrain including acidic pyroclastic rocks. However, the canyon-fill along the Hino River contains pebbles derived from the Paleozoic complex. A member composed of a coal seam and underlain thin sandy shale bed is found at the Ukiishi-hara area, about 5 km northwest of the Nishiichi Basin. This member is probably correlated to the coal-bearing part of the Nishiichi Formation and is estimated to be a product in a small basin connecting the Paleo-Nishiichi Basin with the Paleo-Kottoi embayment.show more
