Abstract The Paleogene stratigraphy in western Kyushu was systematically summarized by NAGAO (1926) at first and has been examined thereafter by various authors from different points of view. The writer presen...ts here a geological map covering all over the Amakusa district newly compiled, and a historical review concerning stratigraphical works on the lowest parts of the Paleogene sequences in western Kyushu.\ The writer reaffirms his conclusion reached in 1975. It was that the major parts of the Akasaki Formation and its equivalents represent the lowest member of the Paleogene in western Kyushu and lie unconformably on the basement rocks excluding in Amakusa-Shimoshima, where the Akasaki Formation is absent and, instead, the Fukuregi Formation directly covers the Cretaceous sediments. The unconformity indicates a remarkable pre-Akasaki tectonic movement in the districts.1
