Abstract |
Lithostratigraphy and heavy mineral assemblages of the "Hirado Formation" narrowly exposed in Hirado—jima Island and the vicinity is preliminarily described in this paper. The "Hirado Formation" consi...sts of loosely consolidated sediments and tuffaceous layers, and is tentatively divided into four members based on lithostratigraphic\ criteria. A distinctive heavy mineral association characterized by the presence of staurolite is confirmed in sediments throughout the beds of the formation and in all localities. This suggests that a part of the clastics in the Hirado-jima Island area was transported from the metamorphic terrain in the Korean Peninsula. Consequently the geological significance of the formation should be emphasized for a detailed paleogeographic study of the Neogene sediments in the Kyushu-Korea region.show more
