Abstract The Usui Formation is the lowermost of the Tertiary formations of the Kasuya Coal-field developing east of Fukuoka City and has a thickness of about 80m or more. This formation has a limited distribut...ion in Shimo-usui area neighbouring Fukuoka International Airport, and has a remarkable purple bed in its lowermost part. Recently we recognized a new outcrop of that purple bed which is composed of noticeable breccia containing dominant angular blocks of schists, amphibolite, vein quartz and metamorphosed green rocks. Similar purple beds showing brecciate facies are also observed at some outcrops of basal part of the overlying Takada Formation which covers with unconformity the basement rocks in almost area of this coal-field except Shimo-usui area. But the former bed is characterized by a matrix composed of small fragments of schists with scarcely clayey and sandy matter. This bed splits and thins away to the east. From the lithological facies, it is supposed that the brecciate purple bed newly recognized may have been cuased by a kind of landslide; rockfall-type or debris flow type. Anyhow, the fact said above suggests a part of paleoenvironment of the coal-field, especially that of the beginning stage of an accumulation of Tertiary coal-bearing sediments of North Kyushu.show more
