Abstract The Fukuchiyama Fault is one of the marginal faults forming the boundary between the Tertiary formations and their basement rocks in the eastern zone of the Chikuho Coal-field and is also known as so-...called active faults first approved in North Kyushu. Recently, some new outcrops related to these faults have been observed in the Komine-Ishizaka Hills area, where the municipal engineering construction for residential quarter of Kitakyushu City have been done, and the fault merges to a fault reported from the same area (URATA et al., 1977). The Fukuchiyama Fault in this area strikes NS and dips 70°W. It forms a boundary between the Paleogene Otsuji Group and the basement rocks including the Cretaceous Kwanmon Group and the Hirao granodiorite, and dislocates also the terrace deposits composed of decayed gravel bed overlying them. Vertical slip of the terrace deposits attains about 4m down to the east at a newly observed outcrop, presuming that the pitch of 10°S formerly reported is applicble, light-lateral slip is 22.5m. This fault itself is cut with lateral dislocation of 10-70m by other faults trendmg NW, which are usually recognized as branches of the main (marginal) fault. These facts indicate that the marginal faults of this coal-field were activated many times by complicated processes from the depositional time of the Tertiary formations to the Recent, and that some NW trending faults are also recognized as "active" faults.show more
