Abstract The Tertiary deposits of about 40m in total thickness containing remarkable purple beds were newly discovered on the southwest of the Munakata Coal-field, northern district of Fukuoka Prefecture. They... are mainly composed of sandstone and siltstone including conglomerate in their basal part, and distributed in narrow area with a length of about 450m and a width of 160m surrounded by granodioritic basement of the Cretaceous age. They are bounded by a reverse fault striking N70°W and dipping 36°-40°S on their southwestern margin. Northeastern boundary of them is also a reverse fault striking N60°W and dipping 50°N. They have an unconformable relationship with the granodiorite on the southeastern and northwestern margins. These deposits are correlating to the Ryoganji Formation, the lowermost division of the Munakata Group of the Munakata Coal-field, based on their lithological facies. The former fault among the boundaries cuts also thick gravel bed which unconformably lies on the Tertiary deposits and is widely distributed over the top of the hills northeast of the former fault. But any dislocation of the same gravel bed is not observed on the site of the latter fault. A western boundary of the Tertiary Munakata Coal-field was newly recognized. The new boundary, which may be a fault, runs to north-northwest and is situated about 500m east of the boundary hitherto estimated. Based on the lithofacies, the member lying between the two boundaries, newly and formerly estimated, may belong to the Cretaceous K wanmon Group. Some problems or questions related to and/or derived from the two new informations described above are also discussed in this papershow more
