Abstract Changes in the physicochemical properties of carbonaceous materials in sediments or sedimentary rocks mainly result from increasing paleotemperature. Therefore, appropriate indicators of organic metam...orphism are useful as a geothermometer to analyze paleotemperature of sedimentary basins. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance on carbonaceous materials is a widely used procedure for this purpose. However, the temperature dependence of the degrees of metamorphism under geological heating duration has not yet been thoroughly studied on a quantitative basis. This paper presents a direct relationship between vitrinite reflectance and the paleotemperature attained during diagenesis/metamorphism based on the results of microthermometry of fluid inclusions in authigenic minerals. Samples used in this study were mainly collected from the Cenozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basins in southwest Japan. Samples were also obtained from a Paleozoic basin for comparison. Both carbonaceous materials and coexisting authigenic minerals were measured from various localities of the districts. The data obtained indicates that the relationships between vitrinite reflectance and paleotemperature of sedimentary basins. The vitrinite reflectance geothermometer presented here can be employed to estimate the temperature during the diagenesis to the burial metamorphism.show more
