Abstract The laboratory name of Coal Geology in the Department of Geology converted to "Organic Geoscience" in the course of reformation of the department to "Earth and Planetary Sciences". One of the research... targets for expected new laboratory had been focused on diagenetic to burial metamorphic alteration of plant derived solid coaly organic matters in sediments by applying such coal petrological information and examining technique as vitrinite reflectance (Ro) measurement for one of the parameters. The pioneering studies on rank variation researches in the major domestic coal fields had started since late 1970. The results revealed a pair of contrasting temperature/pressure conditions in the Cenozoic organic metamorphism between Ishikari coal field in Hokkaido representing lower heat flow region in the Pacific side of the northeastern arc and coal fields in north Kyushu representing higher heat flow region in the continent side (inner zone) of the southwestern arc within the Japanese Island arc system. The expanding fields of studies to investigate the paleo-geothermal information recorded in the closely related Mesozoic System and the non-coal-bearling Tertiary sediments mainly in Kyushu Island had been executed with special attention to the Shimanto Belt in the ocean side (outer zone) of the southwestern arc. The studies resulted in geotectonic revelation of geothermal events with higher paleo-geothermal gradients with local varieties in the Shimanto Belt during the accretion and subduction of the oceanic plate. The organic geoscientific investigations on diagenetic to burial metamorphic phenomena applying the coal geological research techniques have achieved to obtain paleo-geothermal information of the Japanese Island arc system related to Alpine orogeny. The summarized results can be correlated to the same information in the sediments on the more stable cratons or shelves on the earth, and clarify the characteristic geotectonic and geothermal situations of the Cenozoic island arc system. It is evident that the more detailed and closer systematic investigations on the sedimentary organic matters will introduce the more various new information in the geosciences.show more
