Abstract | This study analyzes the acquisition of the simple past, simple future, and the progressive, resultative, and perfective meanings of Japanese present, past and future tenses, based on Reichenbach's SRE... theory. Date was collected from Chinese learners of Japanese using illustrated aides as a method of assisting with sentence completion. The major findings are as follows: 1. The tenses influence the aspects of a verb differently for Chinese learners of japanese than for native speakers. 2. Beginner level learners identify the time relationship depending only on Speech Time (ST) and Event Time (ET). Along with the improvement of their acquisition, they begin to understand the Reference Time (RT) and identify the time relationship in connection with ST, ET, and RT. However, it seems to be very hard for learners to correctly identify the position of RT when it is different from the ET and ST. 3.
