Abstract This research aims to clarify the use of the actual situation of politeness strategy where it is thought that it is good for good and to build possible relations of trust between patients and doctors.... This research also aims to provide a useful proposal for cross-cultural education in both Japanese and Chinese languages. The results of an analysis of the natural conversation in the real medigal sense provides the date for this study.
The politeness theory proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987) was employed in the analysis. Using this theory I analyzed the politeness strategy used by doctors and patients in the daytime and considered the difference from the viewpoint of the pragmatics.
