Abstract | Debating as a method of teaching Japanese language has been gaining attention in Taiwan in recent years. However, such an instruction method that employs debating practices as a means of teaching Japa...nese language to students in Taiwan is yet to be developed. As a foundation study for the development of a debating-focused Japanese language teaching method, this paper analyzes the errors that occur in Japanese debates conducted by Taiwanese learners of the language. This study focuses on two main sources of data research materials. One is the transcripts of video recordings of actual debating sessions held by Taiwanese learners of Japanese language. The second is the results from interviews conducted regarding issues in communication where Japanese native de baters found it difficult to hear and/or understand the meaning of utterances of Taiwanese debaters.T he results from these interviews provide the supporting materials for the error analysis. Additionally, this paper makes light of the grammatical, lexical and pronunciation errors made by Taiwanese learners of Japanese language whilst debating in Japanese and examines the effect that these linguistic errors have on actual communication with Japanese native speakers..show more |
