Abstract | In 1998,M uslims in Fukuoka launched the mosque project. In 2005, they purchased ap lot of land close to Kyushu University.A fter about 3y ears negotiating with Japanese neighbors who were worried abo...ut the building of a mosque, "Fukuoka Masjid" was opened in March 2009 [FUKUOKA MASJID 2009]. After opening the mosque,s ome troubles arose between the Muslims and the local people,b ut they debated each other and were successful in avoiding bigger troubles. Muslims have continued to hold exchange events with non-Muslims but there are obstructions such as "War on Terror" discourse sometimes. This paper points out the pitfalls of discussions regarding℃ultural Essentialism" and its criticisms. For example,s ome anthropologists argue for Japanese "multicultural coexistence (Tabunka-Kyosei)" policy. Tomoaki HARA [2009] criticizes this policy because of it's elimination of nationality or ethnicity and points out℃ultural Essentialism"in the background.H e urges the importance of cultural multidimensional connectivity,li ke gender or class and so on, beyond cultural borders. Furthermore, Samuel HUNTINGTON claims that cultural difference brings about conflicts.M asatoshi DEGUCHI [2004] also examines the problem of Huntington's assertation in the perspective of℃ultural Essentialism". While he reserved to depend on social constructivism upon which national or ethnic identity is constructed. The author argues that social conjuncture makes group movements and combine importance of Islam worship and Muslim network's existence in Japan with a perspective on "Reflexive modernization" [BECK, GIDDENS, LASH 1994]. One,gl obalization makes various members like Muslims come to Fukuoka. The other,J apanese societyc onfronts "Neoliberalism ideology" [Kashimura 2007] problems that indicates collapse of local communities with social fluidization or discourse of self-responsibility. I claim the raison d'etre of Muslim groups and their cooperative religious worship through points of anti-Neoliberalism ideology. Islam teachings encourage mutual aid so as to avoid decline in the social network.show more |
