Abstract Enormous amounts of documents on political matters, such as Han Sake bunko, are preserved in the Archival Museum of Tsushima. In this research I would like to introduce a document regarding the succes...sion of the So clan, the lord of Tsushima island. Y oshinojo, a second son of Y oshiyori (actually he was a third son) was born between Y oshiyori and Katsui Tami, a mistress of Y oshiyori. Y oshiyori had a wife, Kiyohime, a daughter of the lord of Hiroshima, Asano Narikata. Therefore, Yoshinojo had to be adopted by Mrs. Yoshiyori to inherit the position of Y oshiyori. This document demonstrates us how the "chakushi," one of the succeeding processes of the feudal lord, was done during the Edo period. This document is a traditional Japanese notebook, which contains an exquisite cover. In the process of succession, we can observe the negotiation between the So clan and the Tokugawa Shogunate through various networks. As a result, the clan's successor was recognized by the Tokugawa Shogunate. So Y oshiyori had three sons as candidates for the position: the eldest son Hikoshichiro, the second eldest son Katsuchiyo, and the third son Y oshinojo. Katsui Tami became the step mother of Hikoshichio, and Midori, a vassal lady, became the step mother of Katsuchiyo. There was a conspiracy over the succession: however, since the eldest and the second eldest sons passed away, the third son became the successor and became the last lord of Tsushima clan, So Y oshiaki. In the negotiation between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Tsushima lord, Rusui-yaku of Eda Hantei, (Tsushima clan's residential area in Edo) played an import role. The Bakufu Council of elders Raju, the Edo Bakufu's inspector-general's office Ometsuke, the superintendent officers Metsuke and Osakitegashira made a great effort to make Y oshinojo succeed to the position. Among these people there were Masahiro Abe, Nobumasa Ando and Hirochika Kuze, who were the first Bakufu Council of elders. The main purpose of this manuscript is to reveal the process of the succession and how it was recognized by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Through this research, I will clarify the people who played the key role in this process and the network among these people.show more
