Abstract This research investigates a background of the beliefs of the Japanese-language learners in the Kazakhstan from a social viewpoint. The focus of this research is L3 Kazakhstani learners of Japane...se who have little contact with Japanese-language in their country and don't have instrumental motivation for their learning the language. For comparison, Russian L2 learners of Japanese who have similar motivation for learning the language are also tested. This study used 45 questions. As for the question-naire survey, BALLI (Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory) was used. BALLI has 5 categories. "(1) About teacher's role", "(2) About the leaner's autonomy", "(3) About the aptitude for language learning", "(4)About the essence of language learning" "(5)About the motive of language learning". The Japanese-language learners answered by "strongly agree:4", "agree:3", "disagree:2", "strongly disagree: l". The average and standard deviation was calculated and analyzed. The results show that both groups have stronger tendencies of dependence on teachers rather than autonomy learning. The influence of the education system of Soviet Union is suggested. Future problems are in the development of a learning method for the beginners that will match in the Kazakhstan situation and conducting a beliefs survey of intermediate-level learners. At the moment the amount of Japanes language education study is small due to the short history of Japanese-language education in Kazakhstan. However the number of Japanese-language learners in the Kazakhstan exceeded 1,000. Therefore, the research into aspects of the Japanese-language acquisition by the native Kazakh-language speakers is required as never before.show more
