概要 This paper aims at clarifying the change in Masao Maruyama's view of "Modernization" through the analysis of the discussion in the Hakone Conference held from August 29th through September 2nd in 1960.... From the time of World War II to postwar days, Maruyama consistently pursued the problem of how "Modernization" of Japan should be understood. His thought on the problem at the beginning of postwar days, when he was seen as an advocate of "Kindaishugi", was to overcome the "Pre-Modern Age" elements that had led Japan to the war. However, he began to work on the research of the history of thought based on a new recognition, "Thought Transformation by Cultural Contact" and "Plural Modernization", after the 1950's. This change in his thought appears to be solidified on the occasion of the Hakone Conference. In the conference, a polemic emerged between the scholars from Europe and the U.S.A. and Maruyama about whether to include concepts such as "Ethos" and "Ideology" in the conceptual framework of "Moderniza-tion". In his paper "Patterns of Individu~tion and the Case of Japan: A Conceptual Scheme" that was written after the conference, he presented a model of "Individu'.1tion" based on the recognition of the "Ambivalence of Modernization" that had been inspired through the discussion in the conference. After the conference, his view of "Modernization" as a methodological tool was refined from "Stage Theory of Development" to "Multiple Modernization". Probably, however, his perception of "Moderniza・tion" remained to retain the value attitude of "Kindaishugi" that emphasizes the importance of individual-ization and democratization of individuals.続きを見る
