Abstract This paper aims to investigate the behaviours of the three compound verbs "-kakeru," "-hajimeru," and "-dasu," mainly from the point of the view of the relations that they have with the verbs which ap...pear before the three verbs at issue. The results are as follows. ①. "~kakeru" reveals a stronger tendency to form group expressions with telic verbs in comparison to atelic verbs. This phenomenon is closely related to the peculiar meanings of "-kakeru". To be exact, "-kakeru" not only indicates the start of the event, but it also emphasizes the cession point of the event. ②. "-hajimeru", on the other hand, tends to form groups with the non-mutative verbs which evidently reveal the intention of the agents. "-hajimeru" expresses the start of the event, but it also emphasizes the agents' intention. ③. "-dasu" shows the tendency to form groups with the mutative verbs and atelic non-mutative verbs. Oftentimes, in this kind of group expressions, the agents are in plural forms and related to lively activities. "~dasu" indicates the start of a repeated event.show more
