Abstract In this study which uses an interview program as a document for analysis, based on the politeness theory of Brown & Levinson, I assign a focus to the alternative question "shi bu shi" which Chinese us...e often. To achieve communication that Chinese find more harmonious, what kind of role does this alternative question play? In addition, I considered the kind of consideration a speaker give to the psychological view point of the listener. I taped an interview program in Chinese for this study transcribed it, and used it as a document for analysis in this article. When a speaker speaks content to step into "the personal domain of the partner", the "shi bu shi" sentence structure is used over a wide area and tends to demand an affirmative answer concerning one's estimate from a partner. When relations between a speaker and the partner mention the changed topic and privacy of the partner in the case of a parent, a "shi bu shi" sentence structure is used.show more
